Fire officials confirmed that the man was struck while watching the storm under a tree near his home in Northport. There were also reports of downed trees in Copiague, Islip and Deer Park.
No injuries were reported during the storm, and the man struck by lightning was described as “conscious and alert.” The 33-year-old man, whose name was not released, was taken to a hospital in Huntington as a precaution.
A tree that was felled in Copiague reportedly destroyed a fence on Deauville Boulevard.
According to reports, a house in Mount Sinai was struck by lightning, though there was no reported damage.
On Monday morning, there were still 53 reported outages, impacting 4,803 of PSEG’s 1,161,569 customers, including 4,783 in Nassau and 20 in Suffolk. North Hempstead was hit the hardest, with 4,154 customers left in the dark, followed by Oyster Bay with 611 and Hempstead with 18. In Suffolk, customers Babylon, East Hampton, Huntington and Islip all were reporting outages as of 10 a.m.
All power is expected to be restored by 3 p.m. on Monday, June 3.
